Reviews
K-Gr 2-These series entries represent the worst kind of bibliotherapy available. The texts are highly formulaic and irritatingly saccharine. Each page or spread presents a different example of the featured topic, e.g., "Caring is giving everyone a chance to be part of the game." "Honesty is showing your mom and dad you love them." The illustrations in Caring and in Friendship are of poor quality, with little depth or warmth. Attempts are made to represent people of various ethnic backgrounds, but the facial features are generic, with skin color and hair texture being the only indicators of racial identity. In contrast, Mitchell's illustrations in Honesty fare a little better. Each child has individual, ethnically specific features; facial expressions are full of personality and emotion unlike the detached, glazed expressions of the figures in the other two books. Uninspired efforts.-Megan McGuire, Lake View Elementary School, Madison, WI
