Hooked on Phonics: Learn to Read Second Grade System

Leslie McGuire is a writer/illustrator with more than 200 published children’s books. Some of her personal favorites include Brush Your Teeth! (a pop-up book with sharks that actually floss); Big Dan’s Moving Van (winner of a Parents’ Choice Award); Good Night, Little Bear (an American Bookseller’s Association Pick of the List and a Time-Life kids selection); Baby Night Owl; and This Farm is a Mess.

Charlotte Zolotow is a teacher, lecturer, editor, and award-winning author. In 1974 as editor of books for children she was presented the Harper Gold Medal Award for Editorial Excellence. In 1986, she received the University of Minnesota’s Irwin Kerlan Award for her "singular attainments in the creation of children’s literature," and in 1990, the University of Mississippi’s Silver Medallion for "Distinguished Contribution to Children’s Literature." In 1991, the American Library Association adopted a resolution expressing the gratitude of American librarians for her "far-reaching contributions to children’s literature."

David McPhail is an award-winning writer and illustrator of more than 80 books. His works include Edward and the Pirates (a Publishers Weekly bestseller), If You Were My Bunny (another Publishers Weekly bestseller), Pig Pig Grows Up, Emma’s Pet, Lost! (an American Bookseller’s Pick of the List), Annie & Co., Santa’s Book of Names, Henry’s Bear Park, The Dream Child, First Flight, The Snow Lion, The Bear’s Bicycle, and Angel Pig and the Hidden Christmas.

Denys Cazet has written and illustrated many books for children including I’m Not Sleepy, and A Fish in His Pocket, (both named Best Book of the Year by the School Library Journal); Great-Uncle Feliz, Frosted Glass, Never Spit on Your Shoes, (winner of The Young Reader’s medal from the California Reading Association); Good Morning, Maxine! , Daydreams, and Dancing.

Joan Nodset Lexau has published 50 books, many for beginning readers, including Go Away, Dog; Olaf Reads; The Spider Makes a Web (named an Outstanding Science Book by the American Library Association); The Trouble with Terry (given the Children’s Book Award of the Child Study Association); Striped Ice Cream (winner of the Charlie Mae Simon award); and Trouble Will Find You (nominated for a Mystery Writers of America Edgar award).

Teri Weidner is an illustrator whose work has appeared in children’s magazines such as Cricket, Ladybug, and Spider. Her most recent books include The Kid’s Cookbook, Helen the Fish, and The Watching Game.

Bob Ostrom is best known for his wildly silly characters and off-the-wall sense of humor. His books include The Color Bear, The Little Red Hen, The Biker Mice from Mars, The Masked Motorcyclist, The Magic School Bus Going Batty, and The Berenstein Bears Big Fun Park.

Ruth Young is a children’s book writer and illustrator with 17 books in print.

Esther Szegedy is a freelance illustrator for children’s books and magazines. Her recent children’s books include Itch! Itch! , Who’s in the Nest? , and Sumorella.

Dolores Johnson is an author/illustrator whose books include What Will Mommy Do When I’m at School? , What Kind of Baby-Sitter Is This? , and Your Dad Was Just Like You.
