Most of us spend more time advocating for others than we do for ourselves. We are better at identifying what our clients need than naming what we need. Better at building pathways forward for others than for ourselves.
This book is about changing that.
Built around four capacities that research consistently links to wellbeing and performance — Hope, Strength, Bravery, and Curiosity — it offers a practical, evidence-informed framework for anyone who wants more say in their own life. Not more willpower. More self-knowledge, more self-compassion, and more deliberate choice.
Whether you are navigating a career transition, a period of sustained pressure, or simply the quiet sense that something needs to change, this book gives you the tools to get out of your own way — and the questions a good coach would ask to help you find your own answers.
In 2026, 100% of the author's royalties are donated to Feeding America® to support hunger relief.

About the Author
Hi, I'm Ruth Pearce, Expert in Change Management, award winning and ICF accredited coach, speaker, author, and trainer.
I started my career as an Economist at a London Stockbroker but quickly discovered a knack for getting things done. I was the quintessential accidental project manager. After 25 years project managing in Financial Services, State Government, and non-profits, I burned out spectacularly in 2016. I realized it was time for a new direction and, having been a leader who coached and had leaders that coached throughout my career, I started exploring the world of coaching.
Although I was initially a 1:1 life and executive coach, I found my real passion when I started coaching and training groups and teams. Having published a book on team building in 2018 and because of my new career, we moved from Western Massachusetts to North Carolina
Since that time, I have created four LinkedIn Learning courses, I have trained more than 175,000 people online and in person, including more than 60 new coaches, and coached more than 500 hours individually and in groups. I have coached a wide range of clients, from senior executives in Fortune 500 companies to solopreneurs taking their businesses to the next phase of growth. My clients come from all around the world!
Today as a coach and speaker specializing in group work, I help people to increase their influence and self-mastery and transform their experiences by building hope, developing their strengths, increasing bravery and by using curiosity to boost happiness and success.
Be Hopeful; Be Strong; Be Brave; Be Curious!
