Second edition, rare hardcover in red cloth covered boards with bright gilt title on cover and a dulled but legible spine title. Spine has a slight forward lean. Spine ends and tips are bumped and rubbed with a repaired 1/4" split in the spine cloth at foot. Tidy name & 1903 date on fep, no other writing, marks or problems inside. Hinge papers and spine shows a few cracks but all pages tight and holding fine. Occasional foxing in the profusely illustrated 482pp text. Head of page block is darkened from dust. Author portrait frontispiece and 133 line drawings and photographs. Not exlib. No dj. Author states in her preface that this second edition is practically a new book from the first edition of 1892.
