About this title

Synopsis

Hours Of Exercise In The Alps. By John Tyndall is a 19th-century travelogue and scientific compendium in which the author recounts his Alpine journeys and mountaineering expeditions alongside detailed observations on glaciers, ice, and atmospheric phenomena. Interwoven with narratives of climbs—such as the Lauwinen-Thor pass, multiple assaults on the Matterhorn, and ascents of routes like the Jungfrau and the Aletschhorn—are rigorous investigations into the physics of ice, the mechanics of regelation, and the behavior of clouds and light in high atmospheres. The work blends empirical science with vivid natural description, and includes reflections on the dangers of high-alpine wandering, the role of guides, and the relation between bodily exertion and mental insight. It also contains posthumous notes on ice structure, thermometric observations on Mont Blanc, and accounts of glacier motion, all framed by the author’s insistence that careful knowledge, caution, and strength are essential for both exploration and understanding of nature. The volume is a landmark fusion of exploration, science, and natural philosophy.
