About this Item
Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization.(Old Periodicals, 19th Century Newspapers, Americana, Harper's Weekly, Reconstruction, Illustrated Newspapers, Housatonic Railroad, Train Wreck, Haiti, William Cullen Bryant). Issued September 2nd, 1865, New York, by Harper & Brothers. An actual piece of American history issued during Reconstruction. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images, issued contemporary to the events. Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue. During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era. Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued. Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages possibly loose, spine edge rough from removal, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W. Periodical will be shipped gently rolled in a sturdy 3" wide tube to ensure it arrives safely to you! Multiple issues purchased at the same time will be shipped flat.[B8603]. The front page shows: "Collision on the Housatonic Railroad near Bridgeport, Connecticut" and: "Housatonic Railroad Slaughter--House to Which the Wounded Were Conveyed". Inside has an interesting full page: "Wall Street & Broadway--Ways of Getting & Spending Money" showing many vignettes. Also within is a large portrait of "William Cullen Bryant", a displayable doublepage centerfold: 'Newly-Arrived Emigrants at Castle Garden, New York City" (small binding holes are common) showing crowds of immigrants in several vignettes. Also prints of: "Francois Jean Joseph, the Rebel President" of Hayti; "Fabre Geffrard, President of Hayti" "Rear-Admiral Francis H. Gregory" "Hon. Preston King" "Monument to General Buford at West Point" "Accident on Mount Cervin, Among the Italian Alps" "Votarties of the God Vaudoux (Snake Worshipers) Executed for the Crime of Cannibalism at Hayti". The back page has a cartoon: "How the Cable Was Broken". Seller Inventory # B8603
