The crest for Queen s School, North Adelaide to the front board in gilt, the motto Regina Decus Et Tutamen Nostrum under a gilt crown. Prize plate to the front paste down signed by R. G. Jacomb-Hood. Scarce Prize Binding for this school which was established in 1891 and ran until 1949. 276pp. Queen's College was a privately owned and run school for boys on Barton Terrace, North Adelaide. It ran continuously from 1891 to 1949, an Australian record for a proprietary boys' school. In 1885 Rev. Thomas Field (later Canon Field) and Frank Dobbs opened the Adelaide School Collegiate' for the Anglican Church in the Christ Church schoolrooms at c. 79 85 Jeffcott Street, North Adelaide. In 1889 Dobbs retired and was succeeded by the Rev. H. A. Brookshank, M.A. Principal. In 1891 the school was taken over as a private venture by J. H. Lindon and G. L. Heinemann, and renamed "The Queen's School" in honour of Queen Victoria. Heinemann, a member of the famous publishing family, left at the end of 1895 to return to Britain, and Lindon, who by this time was bed-ridden, took on as partner R. G. Jacomb-Hood. Lindon died in 1897. Approximately 7 ¼ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair condition worn and darkened, gilt titles on black label, 5 raised bands separating 6 compartments with gilt decorations. Joints good condition worn, sound. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition half red calf and red buckram boards, gilt decorative lines with gilt crown and scroll decoration to the front. Page edges good condition top edge slightly darkened, all marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition marbled, the front paste down has the Queen s School, North Adelaide book plate dated 1898. End papers good condition marbled. Title good condition b/w vignette to the centre, lightly tanned. Pages good condition b/w frontispiece, tanned throughout with some minor foxing.
