How It Happens offers a great range of diction and emotion and examples Joyce E. Young’ s beautiful lyricism and her skill for truth-telling. By turns passionate, sorrowful, whimsical, reverential and funny this collection of poetry woke me up, hitting me straight without artifice. Joyce Young’ s chapbook, How it Happens, was nominated for a California Book Award. Her poetry has appeared in West Trestle Review and Essential Truths: The Bay Area in Color, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She has had residencies at Hedgebrook, Vermont Studio Center, and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She has taught poetry with The Oakland Public Library, OMCA, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California Poets in the Schools, Bridging: St. Mary’ s College of California. She holds a B. A. in Psychology from Smith College and a M. A. in Consciousness Studies from JFK University.
