Item description from seller

Octavo. pp. [2] 1-206, 189-202, [4] 223-412. In the original polished calf. Two contemporary owner’s names: "N. Griffiths" and "Thomas Griffith 1713" with manuscript notes, by either or both, written in ink on recto and verso of the title page, and lightly interspersed on a few other text pages. Ex-library with two bookplates on front pastedown, small perforated stamp on blank front flyleaf, and two small accession numbers neatly tipped in on paper slips at bottom margin of p. 1 and on back pastedown, else no other markings. The front board is detached, title page is partly damaged with three early tape repairs, lacking all free endpapers except one front flyleaf, with moderate creasing to the final text page, a fair only but sound copy. A scarce early edition of Samuel Butler’s classic polemic, from the library of Thomas Griffith, quite possibly the same Thomas Griffith who served as Commissioner of Property in 1725 for William Penn’s colonial lands in Pennsylvania. *ESTC* R5370.
