Half bound calf leather bindings with marbled paper to boards. raised banding to spines, with full gilt decorations, black and green leather labels lettered in gilt, with gilt line edging to boards. Marbled endpapers, top page edges gilt. In very good conditions. Some minor rubbing to edges, small nicks to leading corners of boards. Endpapers clean. No penned inscriptions. Some minor darkening/offsetting to title pages opposite frontis plates. No tissue guards. Plates with some tanning and occasional minor foxing spots, else nice bright colouring. Some occasional mild foxing and handling marks to pages, p123-4 darkened from old ribbon bookmark in v.2. (ribbon not present.) Else very good clean and tight copies. 2 vols: lxxiv (74) + 444pp & 494pp. Illustrated with 12 hand-coloured full-page engraved plates. Samuel Butler (1612- 1680), satirist; An anti-presbyterian mock romance, derived from Don Quixote. Complete edition. Written to curry favour with the recently restored Charles II. During the Puritan Revolution S. Butler served Sir Samuel Luke, a noted officer of Cromwell who then became his model for Sir Hudibras. With Life of Butler and discourse of the Civil War.
