Hula I Ka La: Dance in the Sun

Hula i ka la means dance in the sun. Twirl. Leap. Dance like sunlight. Hula is such a joyous display of life that being a part of it in any way, as dancer or audience, makes you happy. Hula reveals the unseen soul. It can take you on a journey through each emotion life has to offer: its tragedies and triumphs, the sensation of a first kiss, the sorrow of loss, the strength of spirit, the splendor of one another. Hula is the dance of Hawaii, and the most graceful aesthetic expression of our Island culture. Hula is a lifestyle, provoking inspiration, songs, art, and imagination. Hula is a bond that joins the present with the past, and celebrates that union with incomparable beauty.

After a lifetime of artistic study, which included classical training in the fine arts, Kim Taylor Reece discovered the hula and became enchanted. While trying to capture the subtleties of this ancient dance, Kim turned most often to the contemporary art of black-and-white photography, and determined that only through this medium—with its exclusive concentrations of light and dark—could the passion of hula be honored and preserved.
