To understand the human drama, it is necessary to comprehend the nature of man. Basing himself mainly on the work of Freud, Sinai shows man as impelled by unlimited desires, catastrophically flawed in his biological and psychological makeup, limited in his capacities, an eternal battleground between contradictory urges and condemned to that final death which persistently gnaws at his daily existence. What is true of man is also true of all societies.
Although Sinai, together with some other thinkers, views society as a system, i.e., as bound together by a network of causal relationships and subject to inherent limitations, decline and breakdown, he has contributed something original to this conception. For him, the most crucial variable in the formation of every social system is not the economic, or the ideological variable, but the political one with all its disastrous effects.

Review
It is a work of the most serious caliber. Its scholarship is sweeping, aiming at a synthesis of learning unique in today's specialized (or even trivialized) research. Several separate strands are interwoven, biological-anthropological and psychological analysis, into his historical work. It is both utterly Freudian reductionist and metaphysical. The author combines these two contradictory strands of scholarship into a creative point of view, encompassing all of history, everywhere, for the purpose of judging today's ills...Some Fromm or Erikson could be compared to it: but earlier works, Spengler, et al., would have to be the measure...It is a unique book, both old-fashioned in its sweep and purpose (e.g., moral) and wholly contemporary in its scholarship method.
This is, obviously, Robert Sinai's work...It is a powerful, passionate book...the thesis is as well put as it could be. And his thesis merits life, and for scholarship and reflective men his work commands attention.» (Reader's Report)
