Human Rights (Great Lives)

Biographical portraits of twenty-nine individuals who fought for human rights, from Roger Williams and Thomas Paine to Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King.

Jacobs includes 30 articles about human rights advocates and activists, half of whom are women. Readers will be treated to pieces on Jane Addams, Sojourner Truth, and Chief Joseph, alongside such textbook regulars as Frederick Douglass and Eleanor Roosevelt. These brief, simply written entries are chiefly professional biographies, and touch only briefly on their subjects' personal lives. In most cases, dissenting opinions about the subjects' philosophies are presented openly and fairly. Each article is headed by a " topic sentence ' ' describing that biographee's notability and era; a bibliography is included. --Catherine van Sonnenberg, San Diego Public Library, CA
