Human Systems Integration in the Design of Complex Transport Systems

This book is intended to provide novel insights into the discipline of Human Systems Integration (HSI) and its application to the design of complex systems (including the notion of sociotechnical systems) within the transport industry. Covering diverse domains such as aviation, air traffic management, rail infrastructure and engineering, and unmanned road and aerial vehicles, among others, this title draws on contributions from a diverse group of human factors and engineering professionals with industry experience and additional contributions from subject matter experts in the different domains.

HSI contributes to the field of knowledge by offering a critical perspective on the effectiveness of different techniques that are being applied to design. This approach is complemented throughout with guidance to practically apply the implementation of HSI principles in transportation projects and major acquisition programs throughout the world. Backed up with real-world industry case studies and written in an accessible and engaging manner, every chapter offers a critical analysis of the challenges experienced when implementing HSI techniques as well as the effectiveness and added value to these projects. This book is written by practitioners for practitioners and will guide the reader in the selection of the most effective HSI approaches for major transportation projects.

Human Systems Integration in the Design of Complex Transport Systems will be a vital source of information for practitioners of human factors and ergonomics and those in civil, cognitive systems, aeronautical, systems, aerospace, and automotive engineering. It will equally appeal to those studying or working in psychology, applied artificial intelligence, air transport, design thinking and intelligent transport systems, system integration, and logistics.

Victoria Valentinova is a chartered systems engineer and human factors specialist, with over 15 years of international experience spanning public and private sectors across three continents. She holds a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering and a master’s degree in human factors and safety assessment in aeronautics. She is a chartered professional engineer in both leadership and management and systems engineering, as well as a chartered ergonomist. Victoria possesses expertise in systems engineering leadership, systems assurance, and human factors integration, particularly in the delivery of safety-critical air traffic management systems and major transport infrastructure projects. Her career includes roles such as technical services engineer, human factors manager, systems assurance engineer, and program manager, reflecting her broad and versatile skill set in both technical and strategic domains. She currently serves as Technical Director at Mott MacDonald and is based in Singapore, where she leads the delivery of complex infrastructure programs across the ASEAN region.
