Humanity To Honey Bees: Or, Practical Directions For The Management Of Honey Bees Upon An Improved And Humane Plan, By Which The Lives Of Bees May Be Preserved, And Abundance Of Honey Of A Superior Quality May Be Obtained — Thomas Nutt. This 1832 treatise presents a humane, experience-based system of beekeeping. Framed as a dialogue between a noble lord and the author, it advocates moving away from destructive methods toward methods that preserve bees while maximizing honey. The central innovations include collateral (side) bee-boxes with ventilation, a middle living “pavilion” to slow swarming, the inverted hive, and an observatory hive that enables observation of hive dynamics. The Preface discusses the author’s life and education, and the body details practical instructions: wintering, feeding, management of swarms, fumigation to unite colonies, and objections to stacking (piling) boxes. The work emphasizes humane treatment, minimal disturbance, and scientific use of a thermometer. It includes charts, plates, and testimonies, and argues that wealth and honey can be produced without killing or harming bees. It culminates with miscellaneous directions for apiary care and a catalog of bee-flowers. The author credits Rev. T. Clark for editorial help.
