Bound in a half green calf with marbled paper boards.Originally published in 1771, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker is Smollett"s final, picaresque, epistolary novel, lauded for its humor, social satire, and vivid portrayal of 18th� century life.Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish novelist, satirist, and physician, celebrated for his picaresque works, he is regarded as a master of 18th-century humorous prose.This edition features eight illustrated plate engravings by Phiz, including a frontispiece. Collated, complete.Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne, 1815-1882) was one of the most prolific Victorian illustrators, best known for his long association with Charles Dickens. Bound in a half calf with marbled paper boards.Externally, smart. Slight rubbing to boards and extremities, resulting in slight loss to calf at extremities and marbled paper. Spine faded. Book plate from john Edge to front paste down. Offsetting with the odd slight spot to endpapers. Previous owner's inscription to title page from 1858. Internally, firmly bund. Hinge at frontispiece slightly strained, but remaining firm. Pages bright and clean with one or two spots to fore edge. Very Good.
