First edition. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and twelve black-and-white plates. Collated complete. A detailed account made by Huxley as Assistant Surgeon during his time on the H.M.S. Rattlesnake, on a voyage of discovery and surveying to New Guinea and Australia. The value of Huxley's work was recognised and, on returning to England in 1850, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Written by Thomas Henry Huxley, an English biologist and anthropologist known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Edited from the original manuscripts by Sir Julian Sorell Huxley, a British evolutionary biologist, eugenicist, and internationalist. In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
