(Petroski 2001: 8). Mit dieser im ersten Moment befremdlichen Aussage lie�e sich der Bereich des Ingenieurwesens gut umschreiben. Eine m�gliche Definition f�r das Berufsbild w�re "das Verhindern von Einst�rzen". Jeden Tag ereignen sich in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika zahlreiche Einst�rze von Geb�uden und Infrastruktureinrichtungen. Doch nur wenige erreichen solch ein Ausma�, dass sie als Katastrophen gr��ere mediale Aufmerksamkeit auf sich ziehen. Der Hyatt Regency Walkway Collapse von 1981 ist daf�r ein Beispiel. Er gilt als die bisher schlimmste Einsturzkatastrophe in den USA und wurde zu einem Modell zur Veranschaulichung des Konfliktes zwischen Ethik und Wirtschaftlichkeit im Ingenieurberuf (Engineering Ethics 1995, Hyatt Regency Walkway Collapse 1999). Hierbei steht die Frage im Raum, wie diese beiden Elemente in ein praktikables Gleichgewicht gebracht werden k�nnen, um den Anspr�chen an Konstruktionen wie Geb�uden und Infrastruktureinrichtungen gerecht zu werden. Petroski umschreibt das Ingenieurwesen dabei so: "Engineering is as much art as it is science - subject to human error." (Keane 2006). Darum soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit an dieser besonderen Fallstudie aufgezeigt werden, warum katastrophale Einst�rze passieren und welche Auswirkungen sie auf die Gesellschaft, das betroffene Berufsfeld und die Wissenschaft des anliegenden Fachbereichs haben k�nnen. Dabei sollen folgende Hypothesen �berpr�ft werden: Hypothese 1: Die Fehler, die zum Hyatt Regency Walkway Collapse gef�hrt haben, k�nnen unter technischen, organisatorischen und rechtlichen Aspekten analysiert werden.
