Hydropathy; Or, the Cold Water Cure as Practised by Vincent Priessnitz, at Gr?efenberg

Hydropathy; Or, The Cold Water Cure As Practised By Vincent Priessnitz, At Graefenberg by R. T. Claridge presents the English-language dissemination of Vincent Priessnitz’s hydropathic system. The work is a composite, drawing on Mundé’s hydropathy writings and on Claridge’s own experiences and observations at Graefenberg in the Austrian Silesia. It combines prefatory reflections, case compilations, and practical guidance on applying cold water, air, exercise, and diet to cure and prevent disease, while avoiding drug therapies. The book includes vivid portraits of Graefenberg’s colony, its residents, and its public tables, and describes the ceremonial and logistical elements of the hydropathic treatment—wet sheets, douches, baths, bandages, and crises. It also presents contemporary endorsements from physicians such as Dr. Engel and Dr. Behrend, along with critical observations by Dr. Bigel, and it offers lists of hydropathic establishments and routes to Graefenberg. Overall, it argues for water as a universal therapeutic agent and advocates for a comprehensive lifestyle reform aligned with natural laws of health.
