Hymns In Prose For Children, By The Author Of Lessons For Children. Barbauld. With Several Additional Hymns, By The Wife Of A Clergyman — Anna Laetitia Barbauld's Hymns in Prose for Children is a collection of devotional pieces rendered in prose to suit young readers. Prefaced by Barbauld, the work proposes that poetry may be adapted for children by using plain, memorable prose to evoke reverence, gratitude, and regular religious practice. The hymns invite children to observe the world—the sun, stars, seasons, flowers, beasts, families—and to discern the presence and goodness of God in every sight and sound. Across Hymns I through XV, God is described as Creator, Shepherd, Father, and King, while human life—from mother’s care to the governance of nations—participates in divine order. The poems blend moral instruction with consolation on life, death, resurrection, and heaven, urging constant praise and trust. The book also embodies early educational aims: to cultivate reason, reverence, and memory, and to form a devout habit from childhood onward. It remains a notable attempt to shape piety through gentle prose and natural imagery.
