IMAGES OF RED HOOK BROOKLYN

IMAGES OF RED HOOK is a visual representation of this unique part of Brooklyn but this book is more than simply a gallery of photos - it is a celebration of a neighborhood. There are over 120 full color photos in the book; images of industrial sites (some long-gone), urban mosaics, close-ups, panoramas, a sunset or two, and cranes, lots of cranes. The introduction features a brief history of Red Hook, from its role in the Revolutionary War to the bad old days in the late 20th century. Selected captions have been expanded and are informative paragraph-long descriptions of the history of the location. Scattered throughout are many observations and recollections excerpted from interviews with dozens of people who live and work in Red Hook. These quotes often reveal unique perspectives and are an endearing element of the book.

Tom Rupolo has been living in and around red Hook for 15 years. Formerly a nature photographer, he found that moving to Brooklyn provided opportunities for photographing new subjects such as industrial sites, architectural oddities, street life and close-ups of urban details. This is the second book featuring his photography; he was a contributor to THE DAY WALKER (NY/NJ Trail Conference) published in 2002.
