Second Edition, Rewritten and Enlarged. The first general survey to deal with the improvement of rivers in various parts of the world, including rivers in the United States. Notably, it includes detailed descriptions of American methods and experience relating to the regulation and canalization of large non-tidal rivers. 76 plates (some folding), with numerous illustrations and tables. Quarto, two volumes. Original blue cloth bindings, with gilt titles. Period previous owner's ink signature to a prefatory blank leaf in each volume. The lower corners are bumped. Some general edgewear to the boards, largely at the corners and tips, with a bit of light fading along the spines.
