Its ancient traditions have been preserved with pride throughout the centuries, and in modern India we can see a living link with this fascinationg and colourful past. One of the best ways of appreciating the culture of ancient and modern India is through her sculpture, permanent records of an artistic achievement that is at once sensual, lyrical, and steped in the compassionate and mystic influence of the great Indian religions. In addition, the Indian artist's acute observation and eye for detail give her sculpture an originality and charm that is irresistible. The sculptures represented in this book are taken from the famous collections at the Musée Guimet, Paris, and the British Museum, London, where some of the best-known Indian pieces are held. Their beauty has been admiraly caught by the well-known photographers W. and B. Forman in the colour and black and white Plates.
