With the following illustrations: Three folding maps, 5 collotypes, 2 actual photos tipped, gilded leather paper sample, 3 hand colored lithographs, 3 actual color lacquer samples, 20 woodcuts, 7 other plates. . The lacquer plates are exquisitely done, using the "powdered gold" technique that was used to embellish fine 19th century lacquer ware. . * This is a very rare book outlining the manufactured wares, with statistical tables of imports & exports from 1866-85 at the treaty ports, & other trade statistics. Perhaps the earliest work in English to focus on Japanese art industry, including lacquer ware & painting.
