The monograph for which Abercrombie is best known and which concerns the intellectual and moral nature of man, it went into numerous editions and in 1860 was introduced as a textbook at Calcutta University. This edition includes the additions made to the fifth edition of 1835 which chiefly relate to delirium, memory, dreaming, somnambulism, insanity, idiocy, and spectral illusions. Although his books reflected the influence of Reid, Brown, and Dugald Stewart, they have been accused of not demonstrating any original thinking and Lord Cockburn rather scathingly commented that his fame might have stood higher had he published fewer books.
