The correspondence and reports relative to the XYZ Affair and the strained relations between the U.S. and the French in 1797. Includes reports of ambassadors John Marshall, C.C. Pinckney and Elbridge Gerry; and documents of Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State and John Adams as President. This copy belonged to Maryland congressional representative John H. Nicholson, a close political ally of Thomas Jefferson in the House, and the man who would later conduct impeachment proceedings against John Pickering and Samuel Chase in 1804. EVANS 34838.
