The West Coast's first medical school was established in 1858 at the University of the Pacific, a Methodist Episcopal college in Santa Clara, California. It opened for business in 1859. The driving force behind its creation was Dr. Samuel Cooper. Levi Cooper Lane, Cooper's nephew, joined the faculty in 1861; soon thereafter, he gave this lecture, his first at the medical school during a long and distinguished career.
