Dr. Mamta Gautam is a pioneer in the field of Physician Health. Hailed as "The Doctor’s Doctor, all of her patients in her private psychiatric practice are physician colleagues. She has worked to raise awareness of physician stress and burnout, to decrease the stigma associated with physicians in distress, to encourage colleagues to obtain help, to reduce barriers to obtaining help, and to set up accessible resources to address these issues. She created and directed the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine Wellness Program. This program served as the template for the CMA Centre for Physician Health, where she is the Chair of the Expert Advisory Group. She is the Co-Chair of the Section on Physician Health at the Canadian Psychiatric Association, and is the current President of the Ontario Psychiatric Association. Dr. Gautam is an internationally known expert and speaker on Physician Health. She has created videos, and authored articles and book chapters on this topic. She writes a regular column, Helping Hand, in the Medical Post on Physician Health. She has just released a book Irondoc: Practical Stress Management Tools for Physicians.

Dr. Gautam has been awarded recent honors for her work. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario selected her as one of five 2004 Council Award recipients. This award "recognizes physicians who have demonstrated excellence, and come closest to meeting society’s vision of an ideal physician". She has been nominated for a national award, the Canadian Workplace Wellness Pioneer Award, which recognizes an individual who has made a pioneering contribution to the field of organizational health. She is also a nominee for the YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Healthy Living. This award recognizes women who have improved the well being of their community and are outstanding leaders.
