Iamblichus' Life of Pythagoras or Pythagoric Life

Iamblichus portrays Pythagoras not merely as a mathematician and scientist but as a divine, almost mythological figure whose philosophical teachings were infused with religious and spiritual significance. The biography explores Pythagoras’ early life, travels, and the foundation of his school in Croton, where he taught his famous ideas about numbers, harmony, and the cosmos. Iamblichus emphasizes Pythagoras' belief in the transmigration of souls (metempsychosis), the importance of living a virtuous and ascetic life, and his strict ethical code that his followers adhered to. More than a straightforward biography, Iamblichus' account serves as a defense and exaltation of Pythagorean philosophy. It underscores the mystical and symbolic aspects of Pythagorean teachings, linking mathematics to the divine order of the universe. Iamblichus also aims to present Pythagoras as a spiritual guide, showing how his life and philosophy were grounded in the pursuit of wisdom, purity, and union with the divine. Through this work, Iamblichus played a significant role in shaping the legacy of Pythagoras, blending historical narrative with philosophical interpretation.
