Quarto. Two parts in one volume. [2], [20], 204 pages, and [1] leaf, 196 pages. Illustrated with emblems, herographic figures of virtue, vices, arts, sciences, natural causes, different humors and human passions. The second part is for those who aspire to be or who are in effect orators, players, sculptures, painters, engineers, authors fo medals, deus, ballets and dramatic poems. Ceasare Ripa was one of the great codifiers of Renaissance iconography. Icons and emblems gave clues to the major themes of art but also law. He showed, for instance, the different kinds of justice (e.g., Divine Justice, "worldly justice". Bound in contemporary calf quite worn at corners and spine ends, green spine label printed by hand chipped, browning or staining to leaves. A good copy.
