The Idea of Value

"The Idea of Value" is a rigorous and comprehensive philosophical investigation into the nature and meaning of value across the spectrum of human experience. Written by the distinguished philosopher John Laird, this work systematically examines how the concept of value is applied in diverse fields such as ethics, economics, aesthetics, and metaphysics. Laird delves into the distinction between subjective appreciation and objective worth, seeking to provide a unified theory that accounts for the multifaceted ways in which we attribute importance to things, actions, and ideals.

Through detailed analysis, the author explores the relationship between value and desire, the nature of the good, and the foundations of moral judgment. The book addresses fundamental questions: Is value inherent in objects themselves, or is it a product of human consciousness? How do economic notions of utility relate to ethical standards of virtue? By synthesizing insights from historical philosophical traditions with early 20th-century thought, Laird offers a profound exploration of one of the most central yet elusive concepts in philosophy. This work remains a significant resource for students and scholars of axiology and the history of ideas, providing a clear and scholarly map of the landscape of value theory.
