The main systematic section gives species-by-species identification characters, measurements, plumage details and diagrams, followed by references and an index of scientific names. The small, narrow format was particularly suitable for carrying and consulting in the field. An attractive example of the original 1970 edition of a field guide that subsequently appeared in several revised and expanded editions and became closely associated with European bird ringing and passerine identification.
