About this book The central purpose of this book is to highlihgt the effectiveness of participatory apporoaches in the identification of disabilities in countries with limited resources. The conventional survey methods are complex and costly to countries that are struggling to meet basic needs of their people. Participartory approaches have been proved to be simple, fast and cheap to conduct and have the potential to identify disabilities that the communinty feels need assistance and support. This book is written for governments, NGOs, service providers and individuals involved in the provision of disability services and who would need active participation of the local community for continuity and sustainability.

Joseph K Gona works with KEMRI-Wellcome Trust, Kilifi, Kenya as a disability and rehabilitation researcher. Before joining KEMRI-Wellcome Trust, he worked as a special education teacher, and later as an assessment teacher for children with special needs. He has a MSc degree in community disability studies from University College London.
