Ierne: a Tale: Volume 2

Ierne: A Tale by William Steuart Trench. This 1871 historical romance unfolds in Ireland amid land conflicts, national awakening, and cross-cultural romance. It follows Kathleen and her sister Ierne at Derreen as a Saxon Englishman, the Earl of Killarney, appears in their midst in disguise, and becomes entwined with the sisters and their allies, including Teague O’Hanlon and the tenant-farmers. Across episodes from the Devil’s Bit to the Rock of Cashel and the Skellig Rocks, the story presents dramatic episodes of Ribbonmen, tenant rights, and the moral dilemmas of reform. The plot juxtaposes ambitious landlord reform with peasant resistance, while romance tests loyalty, faith, and identity: Ierne’s struggle between her Celtic heritage and the Saxon suitor’s love; Killarney’s attempts to improve the estate without provoking violence; and Teague’s loyalty. The narrative culminates in trials, moral choices, and the possibility of peace through reform, religious conscience, and a symbolic royal presence in Ireland. With melodrama and social critique, the novel offers both a personal romance and a broader meditation on Ireland’s past and future.
