Handsome nine volume set uniformly bound in full leather - all hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 13.75cm. Very dark purple boards with varied sunning/fading; elaborate gilt stamping along board margins plus tooling at board edges as well as inner dentelles; spines have four fractionally raised bands delineating two gilt lettered title compartments and three gilt tooled compartments; "London" gilt stamped at spine heels; scuffing to spines (particularly at bands) and along joints as well as at board corners. Bindings are likely mid-late nineteenth century and, although no bindery marks are present, quite likely the product of a high-grade London shop. All edges gilt. Ribbon page markers once sewn-in but now frayed remnant separations laid-in. Muted blue endpapers. Scattered light foxing and soiling present along with a few stains. Bindings are firm with no loose boards or cracked joints/hinges. Five of the nine volumes have half-titles; only the two correspondence volumes have frontispieces.
