Illustrated Ed. Summer Time in the Country

Illustrated Ed. Summer Time In The Country by Robert Eldridge Aris Willmott. This volume presents a dual literary conception: a memoir of Willmott’s life as a poet, biographer, and Anglican clergyman, and a companion work in which he records contemplative observations of rural landscapes and seasonal life in a Journal of Summer Time in the Country (first issued in 1849). The text traces Willmott’s upbringing in Wiltshire; education at Harrow and Merchant Taylors’; his Harrovian publications; and his career as a tutor and Cambridge student. It describes his contributions to Fraser’s Magazine, Asiatic Journal, and other periodicals, his friendships with Mitford, Montgomery, and Walter, and his incumbencies at Bear Wood and St. Catherine’s, Bear Wood. The memoir interleaves letters and recollections, detailing health struggles, financial pressures, and a life devoted to literature, religious duty, and philanthropy. The true biographical centerpiece honors a man whose later years were marked by perseverance, pious activity, and sorrow, until his death in 1863; his life is charted through both private letters and public literary works.
