To begin with, Weitzmann is the first to discuss in a systematic and comprehensive manner 'the problem of how miniature and text are related to each other in principle'. By solving essential questions or suggesting possible solutions for them, he opens new vistas to the student of early book illumination. He formulates new terms, which in the precision of their meaning should prove very fruitful tools for an analysis of illustration methods.
