Imaging has always played an important part in the diagnosis of the various problems associated with the genitalia and reproductive organs. Diagnostic applications for patients have evolved over past decades, however imaging has not progressed as rapidly for male patients as for female patients. Imaging has now earned a significant place in the diagnostic armory for women.

In recent years, there has been increasing awareness of male health issues - in particular the rising incidence of testicular tumors. Inevitably this has resulted in both an increased demand for imaging of the male genitalia and higher expectations of these studies.

During the last decade the development of high resolution ultrasound equipment, Doppler and color Doppler have revolutionized the approach to imaging the external genitalia. Contrast radiography and nuclear medicine have been largely replaced by ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The place of problem-solving MRI studies and their interpretation is also discussed in great detail together with the more minor roles played by other modalities: isotope studies, CT, plain radiography and angiography. Imaging and applications of the newer imaging techniques that evaluate the penis, the anterior urethra and erectile dysfunction are also evaluated.
