The Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of God: a Dogma of the Catholic Church

The Immaculate Conception Of The Most Blessed Virgin Mary Of God: A Dogma Of The Catholic Church by J. D. Bryant. This 19th-century Catholic treatise offers a comprehensive defense of the dogma that Mary was conceived without original sin. The author assembles scriptural, patristic, liturgical, and magisterial evidence to demonstrate that the Immaculate Conception is not a novelty but a central, ancient belief affirmed by the Church across the centuries. The work surveys Marian typology in Scripture—including the annunciation, the protoevangelium, and canticles—along with early liturgies (St. James, St. Mark, St. Basil, St. Chrysostom) and the testimonies of the Fathers from the patristic era. It traces the development of the doctrine through the medieval and scholastic periods, the definitions surrounding original sin at the Council of Trent, and culminates in Pius IX’s papal definition in 1854, reaffirmed in 1855. The volume closes with exhortations to venerate Mary and to imitate her virtues as a model for Christian living and devotion to the Immaculate Conception.
