Impact by Design

Impact by Design: Lessons from Medical Drones to Kitchen Tools and Beyond traces the stories of five breakthrough innovations—Zipline drones, the ClearRx prescription system, LifeStraw, Raspberry Pi, and OXO Good Grips—to show how real impact is designed, not accidental.

Drawing on interviews, research, and practice, Thamer Abanami and Albert Shum surface nine repeatable patterns across three lenses: human, systems, and catalyst. Together, these patterns help leaders move from promising ideas to durable outcomes: seeing problems more clearly, shaping solutions that work in the messy reality of organizations and markets, and sustaining momentum over time.

Written for designers, engineers, product leaders, policy makers and students, the book combines narrative case studies with actionable frameworks you can immediately apply to your own work. Rather than offering a rigid methodology, Impact by Design helps you connect human-centered design, systems thinking, and strategic management to shape solutions that are meaningful, transformative, and enduring.

Thamer Abanami is a strategic product and program leader working at the intersection of business, design, and technology. A Latham Fellow at Illinois Tech’s Institute of Design and founder of Lumova Strategies, he brings over two decades of experience, including leadership roles at Microsoft, guiding complex initiatives in rapidly changing environments and helping organizations turn ambitious ideas into durable impact.
