About this Item
1913. 54pp. Fair/None. Soft paper covers with some chipping and loss to edges, spine reinforced with tape, some soiling/scuffing, some browning, minor creasing. Contents clean and tight but for minor soiling/browning, staples a little rusted. B&W illustrations and adverts throughout. An interesting piece of early Boy Scout memorabilia. The Scout movement was founded by Baden-Powell in 1908 and this was the first large scale Scouting event, attended by 30,000 scouts from around the world. This is a poignant piece, bearing in mind that WWI broke out only a year later, and many of that 30,000 were probably killed or injured in the conflict. The booklet includes a plan of the exhibition at Bingley Hall, along with itineraries of the various events, prize winners & descriptions of trade displays. Also included are lots of fascinating adverts, many illustrated, including Quadrant Cycle Co, Charnley & Sons Opticians, the Patent Tip-Up Bath Co, Mappin & Webb, James Bicycles, Boy Scouts' Depot, Alec Watson Scouts' Specialist, Jack Sharp Scout Outfits, the Cape Ostrich Feather Company, Thomas Smith Axes, BSA 22-Bore Rifle, and the BP Teliscout & Compound Microscope. A vanishingly scarce piece of Boy Scout memorabilia.
