The John Day Company, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1956. Book Club Edition (BCE). Fine in a Fine Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with blue topstain, deckled fore-edges and no marks of any kind. The Binding is full orange cloth, color uniform throughout, with black design, title, etc., to spine, unmarked, white endpapers and all corners square with minor wear. The Dust Jacket is fully intact, bright, with light wear at head and heel of spine, and a short essay by Sterling North on the rear panel (this essay does not appear on the dust jacket of the regular edition). See photos. 346 pages. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". This historical novel presents a fictionalized biography of the Empress Dowager Cixi, aka Tzu Hsi, who was a concubine of Xianfeng Emperor at the time of his death in 1861, but who managed to swiftly take control of the Qing dynasty and rule China for nearly 50 years until her death in 1908.
