One of the chief points of interest and value of this Index lies in the evolution of modern place-names from the early forms found in the oldest documents, which have all been carefully traced by means of full cross-references. At the end will be found an Index to places collected under their respective Counties, and additions and correc tions to the whole Index which were overlooked during the passage of the sheets through the press.

The original compilation of the slips from the descriptions of Charters was the work of the Department generally; but the labour of final revision and collation has devolved upon Mr. Ellis and Mr. Bickley, two of the Senior Assistants, under the direction of Mr. Warner, Assistant Keeper of mss.
