About The Author: Hastings Bertrand Lees-Smith (1878 – 1941) was a British politician who transitioned from the Liberal Party to the Labour Party. In 1931, he briefly held a position in the cabinet as the President of the Board of Education. From 1940 until his passing, he served as the acting Leader of the Opposition and as the Leader of the Labour Party, holding the position of chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party. During this time, the government was led by Clement Attlee. In 1919, Lees-Smith joined the Labour Party and was selected as the Labour candidate for Keighley, securing the seat in the 1922 general election, benefitting from a divided opposition.
