Sri Deva Ram Sukul (died November 12, 1965) was an Indian author and spiritual teacher who served as the President of the Yoga Institute of America. He was a key figure in introducing yoga philosophy and practice to North America in the mid-20th century. His work and contributions include: Authorship: He wrote several influential books on yoga and spiritual development. The Yoga Institute of America: Sukul led this organization, which was originally headquartered in New York. After his death in 1965, the leadership passed to his secretary, Louise Evans, and the headquarters moved to Santa Barbara, California. Legacy: His personal papers and the Yoga Institutes's library collection were eventually donated to Stanford University by Louise Evans to ensure they remained available for research. Archive materials related to his life and work, including psychic aspects of color and symbolism, are also maintained in the Louise Evans papers. Sri Deva Ram Sukul led a pilgrimage trip to India and Tibet for his students and special subscribers in 1936. This journey was organized through his Yoga Institute of America, which he founded in the 1920s to teach yoga and Indian philosophy in the United States. Itinerary: The trip included extensive travel throughout India and a trek into Tibet, specifically to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, sites considered highly sacred in yoga and Hindu traditions. Purpose: The pilgrimage was designed as a "cultural and spiritual tour" to give his Western students first-hand experience with the locations and teachers Sukul discussed in his lectures. This is a collection of lessons from the trip.
