The Influence of Christianity on Civilization

The Influence Of Christianity On Civilization by Thomas Craddock. The book offers a historical sketch of how Christian faith and institutions shaped European civilization from the fall of Rome through the medieval era. Craddock argues that Christianity tempered the barbarian impulses of conquest, promoted a universal moral law, and gradually transformed political life, law, and social relations. The work traces four major periods: the late Roman world and the birth of Christ; the decay of the Roman Empire; the rise of Christian Europe under the barbarian kingdoms and papal power; and the high medieval synthesis that prepared modern Europe. Throughout, Craddock emphasizes the alliance of Christian ethics with political order, law, and international relations, showing how faith fostered charity, human rights, and concord among nations. Though written as a historical sketch, the book presents a programmatic view of Christianity as a civilizing force essential to Western civilization and its institutions.
