Information Development Using MIKE2.0

Big data, and information more generally, is big business and top of mind in this era of cyber security as the vision of an integrated world moves from science fiction to a day-to-day reality.  There are no trivial answers to managing this burgeoning resource even though there are a myriad of point solutions.

Since 2006, MIKE2.0 has acted as a free resource for information professionals bringing together best practices in methods, techniques and benchmarking.  With many governments and businesses thinking about how to respond to the latest round of challenges including cyber risks and privacy, the MIKE2.0 book elevates the discussion from day-to-day headlines to a strategic response.

Information is arguably the most important resource available to business and society. With the right information, organizations can compete more effectively, governments can identify those most in need, and consumers can make better personal choices. When the main constraint was the volume of information, the focus was on creating more. The digital age has created an abundance of this resource, but its sheer volume threatens to render it useless unless it is properly harnessed.

As a community of information management professionals, it is time we put our collective heads together to share our practices in a comprehensive fashion. Information Development Using MIKE2.0 is a new way of looking at how information is treated inside organizations, from the perspective that it can be developed as opposed to just being stored.

MIKE2.0 is a collaboration between information professionals around the world to define approaches to streamline the management of information. This companion guide summarizes much of the material that has been created at openmethodology.org and will suit any leader, project manager, or professional interested in understanding how the best organizations are tackling the information challenge.
