Inherited Cities: Archaeological Evidence for the Myth of Progress

There is mounting evidence that modern cities are not new creations, but inheritances layered upon earlier infrastructures—foundations, drains, quarries, and grids that predate the narratives used to explain them.

In Inherited Cities: Archaeological Evidence for the Myth of Progress, Dr. Erik Gray reveals how urban environments across time expose a continuous lineage rather than the gradual evolution proposed by orthodox historians. From Piranesi’s measured prints of Rome to the mapped substructures of Paris, London, and Mexico City, this study traces how so-called progress is quietly constructed atop the ruins of earlier systems.

Drawing from archaeological records, engineering documents, and visual archives, Dr. Gray examines the possibility that the modern world was not made in our time, but inherited—our world is resting upon older, forgotten foundations.
