Innovation Systems, Economic Development and Public Policy: Sustainable Options from Emerging Economies

This book looks at the policy challenges confronting India and other developing countries in creating a robust, sustainable and industrialized economy. It investigates different facets of the nature, structure, growth and impact of innovation in industries, education and within institutions to foster greater productivity and growth.

The volume examines systems adopted to boost innovation and diffusion of technology in different economies while also mapping their success and failures. It offers suggestions for the future for long-term growth, sustainability and inclusiveness amidst dynamic, fast-changing technological frontiers using examples and case studies from India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, among others. The chapters in the book, written to honour the academic work of Professor Lakhwinder Singh in the field of development economics and innovation economics, highlight the importance of adopting and adapting new technologies and development models to local contexts and small industries.

Swati Mehta is Assistant Professor at Punjab School of Economics, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. She is Associate Editor of the African Journal of Science, Technology, Innovation and Development at Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group. She is a member of the Board of Management at the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society (ISS) (2022–24). With a PhD from the Department of Economics, Punjabi University, Patiala, she was a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Economic Research, Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea, with the award of the International Scholar Exchange Fellowship (ISEF) of Korea/Chey Foundation for Advanced Study during March–August 2019. Her area of research includes Economics of Innovation, Innovation Systems Approach, Global Value Chains, Development Economics and Manufacturing Industries in developing countries. She is a member of ‘The Global Network of Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems’ (Globelics). She is a founding member of earlier career Innovation Researchers, CRIS, https://www.cris-is.org. She has published articles in journals like Asian Journal of Technology Innovation, Seoul Journal of Economics, International Journal of Technology Management and Sustainable Development, Economic and Political Weekly and Innovation and Development. She is a referee to journals of repute including Economic Modelling, Millennial Asia, Innovation and Development, Asian Journal of Technology Innovation and African Journal of Science, Technology, Innovation and Development.

Baldev Singh Shergill is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Punjabi University South Campus, Talwandi Sabo, Punjab. He did his PhD in Economics at Punjabi University, Patiala. Prior to his current position, he taught at the University of Delhi. He has published widely in journals of repute like Economic and Political Weekly, Journal of Development Policy and Practice, and the International Journal of Economics and Development, amongst others. He is a referee to many journals including Millennial Asia and Man & Development.
