Innovations in XML Applications and Metadata Management: Advancing Technologies

As new concepts such as virtualization, cloud computing, and web applications continue to emerge, XML has begun to assume the role as the universal language for communication among contrasting systems that grow throughout the internet. Innovations in XML Applications and Metadata Management: Advancing Technologies addresses the functionality between XML and its related technologies towards application development based on previous concepts. This book aims to highlights the variety of purposes for XML applications and how the technology development brings together advancements in the virtual world.

José Carlos Ramalho graduated in 1991 as a Systems and Informatics Engineer. During his graduation he has worked as a freelancer software developer and as a network technician for Apple. During this time he also taught several courses about computer programming for several public institutions. In 1991 he joined the Department of Informatics as an Assistent and started his MSc work. He has worked as a teacher since 1991 until the present. He also has been a researcher of Algoritmi's Research Center until 2004. In 2004 he moved from Algoritmi to the newly created CCTC Research Center. He finishes his Phd in 2000 under the subject ""Structured Documents Semantics"". From 1996 until the present he has been researching in Structured Documents area (currently he is coordinating several projects in Digital Archives and Libraries field). He was responsible for the creation of the conference series called XATA (starting in 2003 until now). He wrote two books and many articles presented in internacional and nacional conferences. During 2008, together with two former post-graduation students he launches KEEP Solutions, a spin-off software company focusing Information Archiving, Information Management, Information Access and Information Deployment.

Alberto Simões is a PhD in Natural Language Processing affiliated with the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (Portugal), and works as a researcher at the Computer Science and Technology Center of the University of Minho. His research interests focus on parallel corpora alignment, probabilistic translation dictionaries and bilingual terminology extraction. Some of his major publications are NATools a statistical word aligner workbench in Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural 31 (2003), Makefile::Parallel dependency specification language. In Anne-Marie Kermarrec, Luc Bougé and Thierry Priol, editors, Euro-Parl 2007, volume 4641 and Portuguese English word alignment: some experiments. In LREC 2008 The 6th edition of the Language and Resources Evaluation Conference, Marrakech (2008).

Ricardo Queirós is an assistant professor at the School of Industrial Studies and Management (ESEIG) in Vila do Conde, which is responsible for courses in the area of ICT and Programming Languages. He is a Ph.D. student of the Doctoral Program in Computer Sciences in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP). His scientific activity is related with e-Learning standards and Interoperability, Languages for XML, Architectural Integration with focus on the development of e-Learning Systems. He is an associated member of the Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS) - an INESC-Porto Associated Laboratory - and a founding member of KMILT (Knowledge Management, Interactive and Learning Technologies) research group.
